What it is

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums: they bleed when you brush and look redder. Left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, where the bone supporting the teeth is lost. It's common in adults and one of the main causes of tooth loss.

The core treatment is a thorough clean below the gum line to remove tartar and bacteria. After that, home care and regular maintenance visits are key. Periodontitis can be controlled, but it takes commitment on both sides.

How it works

  1. Measure the gums

With a fine probe we measure the depth around each tooth and check the bone on X-rays.

  2. Explain the diagnosis

We show you the condition of your gums and the plan we recommend.

  3. Deep clean

We carry out scaling and root planing area by area, under local anaesthetic so you're comfortable.

  4. Re-assess

A few weeks later we measure again to see how your gums have responded.

  5. Maintain

We schedule regular maintenance visits, usually every 3 to 6 months, to stop the disease progressing again.

Aftercare

  • Sensitivity to cold and slightly receded gums after treatment are normal
  • Use interdental brushes every day, in the size we recommend
  • Use the mouthwash we prescribe, only for the time advised
  • If you smoke, stopping makes a big difference to how your gums respond
  • Don't skip maintenance visits: they're the key to treatment

Frequently asked questions

Why do my gums bleed?

The most common cause is inflammation from plaque and tartar (gingivitis). Smoking, some medications, pregnancy and diabetes can also play a part. If bleeding doesn't stop within a few days of good brushing, it's worth getting checked.

Can periodontitis be cured?

Periodontitis can be controlled and stopped from progressing, but lost bone doesn't usually grow back on its own. That's why early treatment and regular maintenance matter so much.

Does a deep clean hurt?

It's done under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn't feel pain during treatment. Afterwards your teeth may be sensitive for a few days, which is usually manageable.

Is gum disease contagious?

The bacteria can be passed on, but whether you develop periodontitis depends mainly on oral hygiene, genetics, smoking and general health. If a family member has been diagnosed, it's worth getting checked.

Are gum health and general health linked?

Periodontitis has been linked with diabetes and other systemic conditions. Looking after your gums is part of looking after your overall health. If you have diabetes, please let us know.
