What it is

Even if you brush well, tartar builds up over time, especially behind the lower front teeth and along the gum line. Tartar irritates the gums, causes bleeding and bad breath and, if it isn't removed, can lead to gum disease. A professional clean with ultrasonic scaling and polishing removes it.

We use the visit to check your whole mouth: decay, old fillings, gums, bite and soft tissues. If we find anything, we show you and explain your options without any pressure. If not, you leave with a clean mouth and peace of mind.

How it works

  1. Check your mouth

We examine your teeth, gums and soft tissues and take X-rays if needed.

  2. Remove the tartar

Using ultrasonic scaling, we remove tartar and plaque, including just below the gum line.

  3. Polish the teeth

We polish away surface stains and leave the teeth smooth, which makes it harder for plaque to stick.

  4. Share tips

We show you which areas you tend to miss and which interdental brush or floss suits you.

  5. Book the next one

Depending on your needs, we recommend coming back in 6 or 12 months and send you a reminder.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I have a dental clean?

Most adults do well with a check-up and clean once a year. If you build up tartar quickly, have gum disease, implants or braces, every 6 months may be better. We'll advise you based on what we see.

Does a professional clean damage enamel?

No. Ultrasonic scaling removes tartar sitting on the tooth without wearing away enamel. Afterwards your teeth may feel a little sensitive, or you may notice small gaps where tartar used to be, and that's normal.

Does a dental clean hurt?

Generally not, although it can be uncomfortable if there's a lot of tartar or your gums are inflamed. If you're sensitive, tell us: we can go more slowly or use a numbing gel.

My gums bleed. Is that normal?

Bleeding when you brush isn't normal: it's usually the first sign of gingivitis. The good news is that at this stage it can be reversed with a professional clean and good home care. If it keeps bleeding, we check for gum disease.

Can I come in for a clean in the afternoon?

Yes. We're open in the afternoons Monday to Thursday, and on Friday and Saturday mornings. You can book online at any time and choose the slot that suits you.
