Root canal treatment in Les Corts

Root canal treatment removes the inflamed or infected nerve from inside a tooth, cleans it and seals it so the tooth can be kept. At our clinic in Les Corts, Barcelona, we carry it out under local anaesthetic, usually in one or two visits. It's a common way to save a tooth instead of extracting it.

What it is

Inside every tooth is the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack or a knock can inflame or infect it, often causing severe pain, lingering sensitivity or an abscess. Root canal treatment cleans the canals, disinfects them and fills them.

After root canal treatment, the tooth is more fragile, especially a back tooth. It often needs a filling or a crown to protect it from breaking. We explain everything before we start.

How it works

  1. Diagnose

We examine the tooth, run sensitivity tests and take an X-ray to confirm the nerve is affected.

  2. Numb the area

We give you a local anaesthetic and isolate the tooth to keep it clean and dry.

  3. Clean the canals

We remove the damaged pulp, then shape and disinfect the canals.

  4. Seal

We fill the canals with a biocompatible material and close the tooth.

  5. Restore the tooth

We rebuild the tooth and assess whether it needs a crown for protection.

Frequently asked questions

Does root canal treatment hurt?

It's done under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn't feel pain during treatment. In fact, many people arrive in a lot of pain and leave feeling relieved. Some tenderness when chewing over the next few days is normal.

Is it better to have a root canal or take the tooth out?

Whenever possible, keeping your own tooth is usually the best option. If the tooth can't be restored, we discuss extraction and ways to replace it, such as an implant.

Why do I need a crown afterwards?

A root-treated tooth, especially a back tooth, is often weakened by decay or a crack. A crown helps protect it from breaking when you chew. It isn't always needed: we'll advise based on your case.

Can a root canal fail?

Most root canal treatments work well for many years, but the result can't be guaranteed. If infection returns, the treatment can sometimes be redone. Regular check-ups help catch problems early.
