What it is

A crown covers a weakened tooth; a bridge replaces one or more teeth by resting on the neighbouring ones; a removable denture (partial or full) comes out for cleaning; and implant-supported teeth are fixed to implants and don't move.

There's no single best option for everyone. It depends on how many teeth are missing, the condition of your bone and gums, your general health and your priorities. Many older patients in the neighbourhood ask us to improve a loose denture, and there are often in-between solutions, such as securing it with a small number of implants.

How it works

  1. Review the options

We examine your mouth and explain the possible alternatives, with their pros and cons.

  2. Prepare your mouth

We treat any decay or gum problems and, for a crown or bridge, prepare the supporting teeth.

  3. Take impressions

We take impressions and record your bite and shade for the dental laboratory.

  4. Try in and adjust

We try the prosthesis in before it's finished to check fit, appearance and comfort.

  5. Fit and follow up

We fit the prosthesis and book you in for small adjustments over the following days.

Aftercare

  • For the first few weeks, it's normal for the prosthesis to feel strange when talking and eating
  • Start with soft food cut into small pieces
  • Clean removable dentures daily and take them out at night if we advise
  • If it causes a sore spot, don't adjust it yourself: come in and we'll fix it
  • Have your prosthesis checked every year: your mouth changes over time

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, a bridge or an implant?

It depends. An implant doesn't require reshaping the neighbouring teeth, while a bridge can be quicker and needs no surgery. We look at your bone, the adjacent teeth and your preferences before making a recommendation.

How long does it take to get used to dentures?

Usually a few weeks. At first, speaking or chewing can feel awkward, and small adjustments are common. With patience and follow-up visits, most people adapt well.

My denture is loose. Can it be fixed?

Often, yes: it can be relined for a better fit, replaced, or secured with two or more implants. We explain which option makes sense for you.

How long does a crown last?

A well-made crown that's properly looked after can last many years, although it depends on hygiene, whether you grind your teeth and the health of the tooth underneath. We can't guarantee an exact timeframe.

How much do dentures or crowns cost?

It varies a lot by type and material. Check our prices page for a guide, and after your assessment we give you a written quote.
